The medical team of the MTN Lagos International Marathon has assured members of the public that it is ready to tackle any eventuality on the D-day.
General Manager Marathon, Mr. Remi Akinwale said in Lagos that adequate medical facilities will be stationed at every strategic point during the race. Lagos will this year host the biggest marathon ever in the country on November 19, with a record 40, 000 athletes expected to participate.
Akinwale said a combined team of medical experts would be drawn from the Critical Rescue International, Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS, and the Federal Sports Medicine Centre to ensure that casualities are given prompt medical attention.
Over sixteen ambulance service teams will be available at strategic points on the 21. 7 kilometre route of the marathon. The GM Marathon said three advance life support ambulance vehicles would also be available. He explained that one of them would be stationed at the finishing point while the other two will parade the entire route to monitor causalities.
He added that referral hospitals have also been arranged where teams of doctors and nurses will be placed on standby. Akinwale however warned participants against running the marathon race with ailments like malaria and diarrhoea.
"Anyone who has had a bout of malaria two weeks prior to the event should not run the marathon competitively. "If they must run they must ensure that they do not stress themselves as the race may put more pressure on the body temperature", he said.
