A former University of Waterloo professor donated $4 million yesterday to step up research into aging and the care of seniors.
The donation from Ronald Schlegel will fund four research chairs at UW and one at Conestoga College. Schlegel had already contributed $2 million to start the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging.
"It will mobilize research and offer enhanced care for an aging population," Schlegel said at Village of Winston Park in Kitchener, a seniors home and a partner in the research. "This will also help get researchers into the field of aging who otherwise may not have considered it."
Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman was among the dignitaries on hand for the announcement.
UW's research chairs will focus on neuroscience, dementia, optimal medication and geriatric medicine.
The chair at Conestoga College is to help improve the care of seniors in the community.
Earlier in the day, Smitherman helped open an addition to St. Mary's Hospital. "I love what you've done with the place," he gushed. The hospital is finishing a $100 million redevelopment.
A community open house will be held today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
