NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez was placed on the 15-day disabled list yesterday with a strained right quadriceps, leaving another major hole in the New York Yankees lineup.
Rodriguez hurt his leg April 20 in Baltimore and missed three games last week before returning for a four-game series at Cleveland. But he was removed for a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning of Monday night's 5-2 win over the Indians and said he felt a "pull" while running the bases.
He had an MRI on Tuesday that revealed a Grade 2 strain.
This is his fifth stint on the DL and first since July 2000 with Seattle.
CLEVELAND -- Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner, in a 7-for-51 slump, was out of the starting lineup last night against Seattle.
Manager Eric Wedge was noncommittal about how long Hafner would be on the bench or if he would remain in the No. 3 spot in the batting order when he does return to the lineup.
Overall, he's batting .210 with 3 homers and 16 RBIs and has only been reaching base at a .302 clip, more than 100 points down from his peak.
SEATTLE -- Right fielder Brad Wilkerson and pinch-hitter Greg Norton were cut by the Seattle Mariners, who promoted catching prospect Jeff Clement and power-hitting outfielder Wladimir Balentien from triple-A Tacoma.
Wilkerson signed a $3 million US, one-year contract and was batting .232 with five RBIs in 19 games.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- St. Louis Cardinals left-hander Mark Mulder gave up nine runs in his fourth rehabilitation start, an indication he's far from ready to return from September shoulder surgery.
Pitching for triple-A Memphis, Mulder allowed nine hits -- three homers -- and seven earned runs in 3 2-3 innings.
CHICAGO -- Umpire Jerry Crawford was released after spending a night in a hospital because of a bad reaction to medicine.
